Newborn Sleep Guide

Sleep Isn’t a Luxury—It’s the Foundation for Your Baby’s Development and Your Well-Being.

This newborn sleep guide is your roadmap for building healthy sleep habits in the first 4 months without stress, strict schedules, or guesswork. It helps you understand what to expect in those early weeks and how to navigate sleep with confidence from day one.

Do these thoughts sound familiar?

Many new moms find themselves wondering:

“Will I ever sleep again?” You just brought your precious baby home and the love is overwhelming, but so is the sheer exhaustion. Everyone joked about the sleepless nights, but the reality hits differently when you’re in it. You’re not someone who can run on 4 hours of broken sleep.

"Is this normal?" You're constantly Googling sleep patterns, wake windows, and whether your baby’s short naps or noisy grunts mean something’s wrong. You were told newborns sleep a lot—but no one mentioned they might only sleep when you're holding them.

"Am I creating bad habits?" You want to soak up all the snuggles without losing yourself in the process. You’re not trying to “sleep train” a newborn—you just want to understand what’s normal, what’s not, and how to gently guide your baby towards healthy sleep habits…without creating ones you’ll have to undo later.

"How can I sleep when the baby sleeps?" You keep hearing, “sleep when the baby sleeps,” but when exactly is that? The dishes are already piled high, the laundry needs folding, and you haven’t eaten anything in hours.

"Why won't my baby sleep in the bassinet?" Every transfer feels like a gamble, and you're exhausted from trying the same things over and over again. You were told newborns sleep a lot—but no one mentioned they might only sleep when you're holding them.

You want to feel confident and rested in the newborn stage, but you’re not sure how to get there…

Who this guide is for...

This guide was made with you in mind if you're:

A first-time mom in the first 4 months, navigating the beautiful chaos of life with a newborn.

A mom on maternity leave who knows the clock is ticking—and wants to gently encourage longer stretches of sleep before heading back to work.

A parent who wants to avoid formal sleep training later on by building healthy habits from the start.

A family craving a predictable rhythm without rigid schedules, so you can support your baby’s needs and live life with more flow.

Anyone who wants to feel calmer, more confident, and less overwhelmed in the fourth trimester of motherhood.

About Me

I’m Teal, proud wife and mother of two unbelievably sweet and mischievous boys who love to sleep. They go down easily for naps, are excited about bedtime, and sleep soundly through the night. It wasn’t always that way though.

Sleep was one of the things I struggled with most during postpartum. When I became a mom in April 2020, in the thick of the pandemic, I was completely overwhelmed and exhausted. There were no visitors, extra sets of hands, or physical support that is so desperately needed during the fourth trimester. I found myself struggling mentally and physically all while trying to navigate the complexities of newfound motherhood.

It wasn’t until I returned to work that I realized how sleep deprived I actually was and the impact it was having on my well-being and family. I would doze off while pumping in my office, forget my work bag at home, and drink more coffee than I’d like to admit. My chronic fatigue began to wear on my marital relationship as I would snap at my husband for the littlest of things. The sleepless nights of feedings and wakings had worn me down and I was struggling to stay afloat.

Like so many of you, I found myself scrolling at 2am, desperate for an answer. That’s when I discovered the incredible world of sleep consulting! Within two weeks, my baby was sleeping 12 hours through the night and napping consistently during the day—and I finally felt like myself again. It. Was. Life. Changing.

It is no secret that sleep deprivation affects all aspects of our life, especially during postpartum. After my own experience, I knew I wanted to pay-it-forward to other exhausted moms. With over ten years of experience in special education and mental health—and Bachelor’s degrees in Elementary Education, Psychology, and a Master’s in Educational Leadership—I now work with families like yours in a new, and deeply meaningful, way: helping them get the sleep they need to thrive.

Let’s help you sleep more, stress less, and live fully!

What clients have to say

"We were nearing 2 weeks of not sleeping due to our 1 month old refusing to sleep in her bassinet at night. Teal created a plan for us to implement that night and we immediately saw improvement. She helped us better understand what our daughter's schedule should look like during the day, how to manage her witching hour and create a peaceful bedtime routine, and provided different pacifier recommendations. Teal was incredibly responsive, professional, knowledgeable, and most importantly, deeply approachable and empathetic. We are forever grateful for Teal and would highly recommend working with her to overcome any of your little one's sleep challenges!"

Frequently Asked Questions

My baby is close to 4 months and sleep is a struggle. Is this guide appropriate for me?

This guide is designed to help you establish healthy sleep foundations during the first 4 months, so some of the information is still helpful if your baby is just shy of that milestone. However, if sleep has already become a daily challenge, you may benefit more from my Infant & Baby Sleep Package, which offers more targeted sleep support for babies 4 months and up. It’s designed to help you reach your sleep goals faster and with less stress.

What is sleep training and why do I need to wait until my baby is 4 months?

Sleep training is the process of helping your baby learn how to fall asleep independently, stay asleep for longer stretches, and resettle on their own during night wakings. While some babies naturally develop these skills, most need gentle guidance and support from their caregivers.

Sleep training looks different for every family—it’s not one-size-fits-all. It’s often used to address challenges like frequent night wakings, early morning wake-ups, nap struggles, bedtime battles, sleep regressions, or the transition from co-sleeping or room sharing.

That said, sleep training isn’t always necessary. Many babies begin sleeping more independently once healthy sleep foundations are in place—and that’s exactly what this guide helps you with.

Although some sleep training methods can begin around 3 months (if your baby is at least 12 pounds), I personally and professionally recommend waiting until around 5 months. By then, your baby has typically gone through the 4-month sleep regression—a major developmental shift when sleep cycles mature from newborn to adult-like patterns. At that point, they’re more biologically and developmentally ready for sleep training, if it’s needed at all.

How long is my newborn expected to sleep after buying this guide?

Newborn sleep is unique and constantly changing. It’s completely normal—and developmentally necessary—for your baby to wake multiple times at night for feedings in the early weeks.

As your baby grows, their sleep patterns will naturally become more organized. Around 2–3 months, many babies begin to sleep in longer stretches and may even sleep through the night depending on their individual needs. Others may still wake 1–2 times to feed, especially during growth spurts.

This guide won’t promise a full night’s sleep overnight, because it doesn’t include sleep training and your newborn may not be developmentally ready for that. Instead, it focuses on building healthy sleep foundations so your baby gradually learns to sleep longer stretches and is more easily soothed back to sleep when they do wake.
